What is Pattern Making?

In the garment industry, the form that is made by drawing a replica of each part of a garment on a flat cardboard is called a pattern. Separate patterns are made for each part of the garment. These patterns are used to paint each part of the garment on the cloth or on marker paper before cutting the cloth. The design according to which the pattern will be prepared, one has to decide beforehand how many pieces of the pattern will be made. Methods of Pattern Making;

Drafting:

Drafting is a very basic two-dimensional method of preparing a paper pattern. The pattern is mostly prepared on brown paper using personal measurements of the wearer. Flat Pattern Making involves developing a fitted basic pattern with comfort ease to fit a person or body from. A sloper is the starting point for flat pattern designing, which is a simple pattern that fits the body with enough ease for movement and comfort. Five basic pattern pieces are used for women’s clothing, including a bodice front and back, a sleeve, and a fitted skirt front and back with darts. Accurate measurements are crucial in flat pattern making, and the basic sloper has no seam allowances, allowing for easy manipulations to create various styles. Flat pattern marking is widely used in the ready –to-wear market due to its speed and accuracy.
